Nursing leadership and care management in healthcare institutions

The management of care in healthcare institutions faces challenges associated with staff shortages, workload overload, professional burnout, and variability in care quality, which positions nursing leadership as a strategic component. The study aimed to analyze the relationship between nursing leadership and care management in healthcare institutions. A qualitative, documentary, non-experimental, and longitudinal study was conducted thru the analysis of literature published between 2020 and 2025 in scientific databases and institutional repositories, applying deductive, inductive, and analytical reasoning. The results showed that relational styles accounted for 47.2% of the identified modalities and were characterized by communication, support, accessibility, clinical competence, and decision-making participation; likewise, 75.3% of the results on care management focused on staff conditions, while professional burnout reached a mean prevalence of 30.7%. The evidence suggests that leadership was related to care management primarily thru the work environment, empowerment, and team coordination, although without demonstrating causality. It was concluded that relational leadership constitutes a relevant pathway to strengthen the quality, safety, and continuity of care.
