Abstract

The growing vulnerability of Latin American cities to flooding, extreme heat, and environmental degradation calls for adaptation strategies capable of generating multiple benefits. The study aimed to analyze the experiences and outcomes of nature-based solutions applied to urban climate adaptation in Ecuador and Latin America. A qualitative, documentary, non-experimental, cross-sectional, and descriptive study was conducted by reviewing scientific articles, urban plans, technical assessments, and institutional documents published between 2020 and 2025. The findings revealed a predominance of interventions focused on water management, ecological restoration, and green infrastructure, with favorable results in terms of runoff reduction, thermal regulation, environmental quality, mobility, and health. However, economic valuation, institutional monitoring, and community participation showed less development and comparability. The evidence suggests that effectiveness depended on scale, maintenance, funding, inter-institutional coordination, and administrative continuity; therefore, the results cannot be generalized causally. It is concluded that these solutions constitute a relevant alternative for urban adaptation, provided they are integrated into territorial planning through sustainable indicators, budgets, and governance mechanisms.
