Abstract

Latin American secondary education faces low levels of participation and learning, along with technological access gaps that limit the equitable application of innovative strategies. The study aimed to analyze the relationship between gamification and active learning in secondary education students, considering participation, motivation, self-regulation, academic performance, and connectivity. A documentary research with a mixed approach, non-experimental design, cross-sectional and exploratory scope was developed, thru searches in scientific databases and descriptive and interpretive analysis of recent publications. The results showed the predominance of points, rankings, competition, and badges, as well as a small to moderate positive association with motivation and favorable effects on performance, although with high heterogeneity. The evidence indicated that effectiveness did not depend exclusively on the platform used, but rather on the articulation between pedagogical objectives, feedback, autonomy, and meaningful participation. An urban-rural connectivity gap was also identified, which affected the digital implementation. It was concluded that gamification can support active learning when it meets didactic criteria, combines digital and analog resources, and adapts to the real conditions of Ecuadorian secondary education
